Say Hello 2 Collective Soul

While the lineup has changed over the years, much like a lot of the bands I've followed since the 90's, brothers Ed and Dean Roland remain the consistent soul of Collective Soul. Originally out of Georgia, today's lineup, consisting of Will Turpin (bass), Johnny Rabb (drums), and Jesse Triplett (guitar) is still dropping fresh alt rock including 2024's Here To Eternity (recorded at Elvis Presley's Palm Springs estate) and their 2026 drop Touch and Go. 



The band filmed the documentary Give Me A Word while recording Here To Eternity in California. The documentary, available on multiple streaming platforms including Amazon Prime and Apple TV, details the band's sudden rise to fame via 90's anthem "Shine", the lawsuit against their management company, their financial hard times before Disciplined Breakdown, and how the current lineup came to be. 

We've seen Collective Soul - three times in the last few years. They continue to bring great energy to the stage, extravagant hats on Ed's head, and do a great job mixing up the setlist with hits like Shine, Heavy, Run, and December while giving the crowd a taste of newer songs like Not the Same, Mother's Love, and Eye on You.

Their 2026 album Touch and Go was released first on vinyl in April as part of record store day - I'm happy to say I snagged an early copy from Strictly Discs in Madison, WI. They just dropped the album for streaming a couple weeks ago. It has a nostalgic vibe as it pays respects to New Wave music - even the green and pink album art recalls New Wave vibes. If I had to pick my favorite bands from high school, the list probably looks something like this: Fuel, Live, Bush, Pearl Jam, and Collective Soul. Of that group, Pearl Jam has had the fewest lineup changes since I started listening — at least until Matt Cameron’s recent departure. Collective Soul has swapped out drummers and lead guitarists since I became a fan. Bush went on hiatus from about 2003 to 2010, with Gavin and Robin being the only returning members, and today Gavin is the lone original member still in the band. Live is its own interesting case: you can catch them touring — and it’s a fun show — but it’s essentially Ed plus touring musicians. Fuel might have the most complicated member timeline on Wikipedia. Something Like Alt Rock: Best of March 2026

March was a crazy good month for new music, the March playlist peaked at 73 songs. March was full of drops from familiar names like Foo Fighters, Sevendust, Nickelback, U2, New Found Glory, Young the Giant, Depeche Mode, and so many more. And at the same time, lots of bands we've been following since launching Smells Like Alt Rock like: As It Is, Lansdowne, Kensington, L0L0, Dexter and Moonrocks, and The Haunt - dropped some real bangers too.  The task to cut the playlist down for the end of the month was really hard this time, we got it down to a top 20 with 5 honorable mentions.
