Shut Up and Rock: Embracing Lead Singer Changes
If I had to pick my favorite bands from high school, the list probably looks something like this: Fuel, Live, Bush, Pearl Jam, and Collective Soul. Of that group, Pearl Jam has had the fewest lineup changes since I started listening — at least until Matt Cameron’s recent departure.
Collective Soul has swapped out drummers and lead guitarists since I became a fan. Bush went on hiatus from about 2003 to 2010, with Gavin and Robin being the only returning members, and today Gavin is the lone original member still in the band. Live is its own interesting case: you can catch them touring — and it’s a fun show — but it’s essentially Ed plus touring musicians.
Fuel might have the most complicated member timeline on Wikipedia. For a lot of Fuelies, the “original” band was Brett, Carl, Jeff, and Kevin — but there was a version of the band before that, and the Sunburn album was recorded with a session drummer. The 2007 Angels & Devils album featured only Carl and Jeff from that “original” four. Then came the whole “Re-Fueled” era with Brett and a new group of players. The current lineup really started to take shape after COVID, when Carl and Kevin reunited and brought Tommy, Mark, and Aaron (pictured above on the Summer of 99 Cruise) into the band.
Okay, that’s a lot of lists… so what’s the point? Band membership is transient — especially for groups that have been touring for 30 years.
But there are certain lineup changes fans tend to accept without much fuss. I don’t remember Jesse joining Collective Soul causing any major uproar. (Love Jesse, by the way — he’s fantastic!)
The change that does cause a stir — the one that brings the trolls out in force — is the lead singer change. Over the past few years, several national acts have brought in new vocalists, including Linkin Park, Hinder, Fuel, and Anberlin. I’ve had the privilege of rocking out with three of these bands in 2025, and they’re absolutely killing it live. They’re also all working on new music.
There’s a ton of energy around these bands, which is why I’m regularly baffled by the trolling aimed at them and the vocalists they’ve added. Every one of these singers understands the legacy they’re stepping into. They’re on the road, working hard to bring the music we love to life — on buses, on planes, away from home, giving everything they’ve got. And they’ve all been in the studio, too.
Emily, Marshal, Aaron, and Matty have taken way more flack than they deserve.
Most of us go to work in jobs that aren’t public-facing. No one is posting online about our performance or arguing that our employer shouldn’t have hired us.
So here’s my take: if you love the music, go to the show when they come through your area. You'll be impressed by the live show. Check out the new songs these bands are putting out — I’ve linked some below. And if you don’t enjoy the new direction because it’s different, that’s fine. Just leave it at that.
Anyway — we’re feeling the energy around these bands, and we love these songs. Hopefully you’ll enjoy them as much as we do

Commenting on Shut Up and Rock. This was a very well done article. I’m a huge fan of Fuel from the original group with Brett to the current version with Aaron. I am very excited for the new original music coming in 2026. Out of the 3 songs I’ve heard that will be on it, the song Want It is my favorite. Get out and see these guys live. Aaron is my favorite frontman currently touring. He is passionate and full of energy. One last thing…I wish you had included Saliva on your list as Bobby Amaru deserves some praise for his hard work and amazing voice taking over for Josey Scott’s departure years ago.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading! Very.excited for the new Fuel album here - ready to add to the playlists whenever the singles start to drop. I was aware of Saliva's lineup change but isn't band I follow as closely. Saw them in 2024 and they sounded good - their collaborations with other artists have been regulars on my release radar but have been hit or miss for me. Recently enjoyed Worlds Apart with Fallen Within.
DeleteHonorable mention goes to Saving Abel with their new front man, and my good friend, Randy Arthur Webb. He brings a ton of flare and his onstage persona is exactly the same as off stage, hes just an all around awesome person.
