Say Hello 2 - 3 Doors Down

Something Like Alt Rock was inspired by the great alt‑rock bands of the ’90s and early 2000s — with the intention of reflecting on and celebrating their music while also spotlighting new artists who carry that spirit forward.

Today, we lost one of the greats. Brad Arnold, the unmistakable voice of 3 Doors Down, passed away after a battle with cancer. The band had canceled their 2025 tour as Brad fought stage 4 renal carcinoma, following a massive year of touring in 2024 that kicked off with Creed on the Summer of ’99 cruise.

It’s hard to overstate the importance of 3 Doors Down to the late‑’90s and early‑2000s rock landscape. They were a major part of the crossover from alternative radio to the mainstream, standing shoulder‑to‑shoulder with contemporaries like Creed, Fuel, and Nickelback. The last couple of summers have been a celebration of that era, which made it especially exciting to see 3 Doors Down team up with Creed in 2024 and all the more heartbreaking when they had to step away from touring in 2025, missing events like the Summer of ’99 Festival at Alpine Valley.

For many listeners, their introduction to Brad’s voice came blasting out of the radio with comic‑book imagery and approachable lyrics. “Kryptonite” was an undeniable banger - upbeat, catchy, and everywhere. It dominated the 2000 year‑end charts, hitting #1 on US Mainstream Rock, #8 on Top 40, and #15 on the Hot 100.

“Kryptonite” opened the door to The Better Life, an album packed with radio‑ready singles. “Loser,” “Duck and Run,” and “Be Like That” all made strong showings on rock radio, with “Be Like That” crossing over into the Top 40. And the hits didn’t stop there.

Their 2002 follow‑up, Away From the Sun, continued their run of emotionally open, sentimental rock. “Here Without You” and “When I’m Gone” became defining ballads of the era. Brad had a way of reaching listeners on a deeper level and if you doubt that, walk into any karaoke bar on a weekend. You’ll hear someone screaming “Kryptonite” with the whole room singing along, or watch the place go quiet when someone steps up to sing “Here Without You.”

I had the privilege of seeing Brad and 3 Doors Down in a relatively small venue during the touring cycle for The Better Life. In the spring of 2001, they played a run of college‑campus shows — Stony Brook, Towson, Toledo, Dayton, Cedar Falls, and Normal, IL at Illinois State University. My younger sister had just turned 14, and 3 Doors Down was one of her favorite bands, so I took her to see them with Fuel and Oleander at Braden Auditorium. To the best of my memory, it was her first rock concert.

For most of my life, that show became the bar by which all other concerts were judged. Oleander opened and absolutely delivered. We shouted “Are You There?” and “I Walk Alone” right back at them. Then the two headliners took over. Fuel, my favorite band of all time, tore through “Hemorrhage,” “Bad Day,” and “Shimmer.” Three Doors Down closed the night with the hits from The Better Life, and the crowd never stopped singing. (Check out our Spotify playlist based on the show.)

It was a truly epic night; two bands that helped define an era of rock, sharing one stage.

Today, we say thank you to Brad for the memories and the music. We’ll keep singing “Kryptonite,” and we’ll think of you every time the whole bar joins the chorus.
