Say Hello 2 Deer Fang

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve done a band spotlight, so going back to where this whole new‑music journey started feels right. Our push to explore fresh sounds really kicked off when familiar names like Fuel, Bush, and Pearl Jam dropped their post‑pandemic bangers: Anomaly, The Art of Survival, and Dark Matter. Around the same time, we found ourselves tuning back into 106.7 FM The Resistance in Madison, WI. At first, we were laser‑focused on new tracks from the bands we already loved, but as radio tends to do, it slowly opened the door to new artists. And honestly? It was good.

In 2024, we grabbed a family Spotify account. My listening habits were still anchored in the old favorites, but the whole point was to branch out, to actively seek out new music. And I’ll be real; it was a struggle.

I kept waiting for a song to hit me the way music did back in junior high and high school — when the right guitar riff or the right lyric made you think, this is my song. You know that feeling.

Then one late‑summer, early‑fall night, it happened. On the All New Rock playlist, “Low Tide” by Deer Fang showed up. The guitar riffs grabbed me first — powerful, reminiscent of the best post‑grunge. I hate comparing bands, but it carries a little of that Fuel “Last Time” energy. And then Lauren starts singing. Her voice is ethereal, telling a story about a monster dragging her to the depths of the sea. The metaphor lands immediately — an artistic, haunting way to talk about mental health.

The music video is a blast, too. It leans into the noir, black‑and‑white aesthetic Deer Fang uses in a number of their visuals. The old‑school horror vibe feels like something straight out of The Outer Limits or a late‑night Svengoolie feature.

“Low Tide” was still sitting on Spotify’s Adrenaline playlist when the Canadian rockers dropped their next track, “Gone,” which also hit both All New Rock and Adrenaline. Then in January 2025 came “Left Unseen,” which landed at #18 on our Top 55 Songs of 2025. All three tracks appeared on their Bloom EP in February.

Based out of Niagara, Deer Fang spent the year playing shows across Ontario — St. Catharines, London, Hamilton. These shoegaze‑alt rockers are great at keeping fans in the loop online, teasing new releases (I love a good pre‑save) and pairing each drop with stylish music videos that feel like they could’ve premiered on a 90s IFC (that's Independent Film Channel for you youngsters) Friday night.

There’s a lot of good energy around this band right now. Here’s hoping they play a little closer than Hamilton this year so we can finally catch Deer Fang live. Check out their latest below:
