2026: Happy New Year! / New Music!

Happy New Years, all! 

2026 is here! That means we'll start all over again, listening to new music, sharing to playlists, and cutting each playlist back at the end of the month. 2025 was awesome, a bunch of bands dropped a ton of new music, and we're looking forward to new music dropping in 2026. 

If you are new to Smells Like Alt Rock, here's what we have going on:

  • Something Like Alt Rock Posts - our bread and butter, posts of new music each week to build up a monthly playlist that we cut back to ~15 songs. Then a quarterly playlist, and an annual playlist. 
  • Say Hello 2 Posts - to spotlight a particular band, we're enjoying. 
  • Other content including a concert calendar that focuses on some favorite venues in / near Southern WI

To keep ourselves organized, we're starting a new playlist for the back-half of the decade. It's empty currently, but soon you'll be able to find new music on the 2026-2030 Spotify Playlist.  And hopefully soon means this weekend as new music could still drop tomorrow even with the New Year's holiday, but we might have to wait for January 9.  

In the meantime, here's a taste of the Alt Rock albums that are expected to drop in Q1 of 2026:

If I had to pick my favorite bands from high school, the list probably looks something like this: Fuel, Live, Bush, Pearl Jam, and Collective Soul. Of that group, Pearl Jam has had the fewest lineup changes since I started listening — at least until Matt Cameron’s recent departure. Collective Soul has swapped out drummers and lead guitarists since I became a fan. Bush went on hiatus from about 2003 to 2010, with Gavin and Robin being the only returning members, and today Gavin is the lone original member still in the band. Live is its own interesting case: you can catch them touring — and it’s a fun show — but it’s essentially Ed plus touring musicians. Fuel might have the most complicated member timeline on Wikipedia. Something Like Alt Rock: Best of March 2026

March was a crazy good month for new music, the March playlist peaked at 73 songs. March was full of drops from familiar names like Foo Fighters, Sevendust, Nickelback, U2, New Found Glory, Young the Giant, Depeche Mode, and so many more. And at the same time, lots of bands we've been following since launching Smells Like Alt Rock like: As It Is, Lansdowne, Kensington, L0L0, Dexter and Moonrocks, and The Haunt - dropped some real bangers too.  The task to cut the playlist down for the end of the month was really hard this time, we got it down to a top 20 with 5 honorable mentions.
