Album and EP of the Year - 2025

2025 isn't really done yet, but we'll start counting things down now so that you have time to add some CDs or vinyls to your Christmas list, or maybe if you are looking to rock out a concert this winter - you can check out one of these bands. 

We're notoriously terrible at picking favorites, the list was growing, rather than shrinking as we put this list together. We listened to a ton of music this year, and that's a big part of why the list kept growing. We'd like to thank all of the bands for a year of fantastic music and fantastic concerts. 

We decided to break things down into a few a different lists, including our top picks for albums and EPs that haven't dropped yet.

We'll start with the upcoming albums for 2025: 

Lots of bands dropped extended plays this year, some of these even made it onto vinyl - they aren't long - take the time to listen to them all. We managed to see 3 of these bands this year. 

Here are the top 5 EPs for 2025:

As we get to full album of the year, we'll start with the bands and albums that were heavily discussed but didn't making the final ten. All of these are fantastic albums. And we've seen all but one of these bands live. If they are coming near you, go see them.

It's unfortunate that we didn't see all of the bands this year, but we are loving these albums. And you can expect to hear from all of these bands in other countdowns as we start to close out 2025, especially the Top Songs of 2025 list. Without further ado:

If I had to pick my favorite bands from high school, the list probably looks something like this: Fuel, Live, Bush, Pearl Jam, and Collective Soul. Of that group, Pearl Jam has had the fewest lineup changes since I started listening — at least until Matt Cameron’s recent departure. Collective Soul has swapped out drummers and lead guitarists since I became a fan. Bush went on hiatus from about 2003 to 2010, with Gavin and Robin being the only returning members, and today Gavin is the lone original member still in the band. Live is its own interesting case: you can catch them touring — and it’s a fun show — but it’s essentially Ed plus touring musicians. Fuel might have the most complicated member timeline on Wikipedia. Something Like Alt Rock: Best of March 2026

March was a crazy good month for new music, the March playlist peaked at 73 songs. March was full of drops from familiar names like Foo Fighters, Sevendust, Nickelback, U2, New Found Glory, Young the Giant, Depeche Mode, and so many more. And at the same time, lots of bands we've been following since launching Smells Like Alt Rock like: As It Is, Lansdowne, Kensington, L0L0, Dexter and Moonrocks, and The Haunt - dropped some real bangers too.  The task to cut the playlist down for the end of the month was really hard this time, we got it down to a top 20 with 5 honorable mentions.
